Shaping construction’s future with Apprenticeships and Work Experience schemes

Apprenticeships Working Together Celebration

It’s an exciting time to be part of the Maxiflow family! We are currently engaged in two important schemes which are helping to introduce young people to the construction industry.

The National Apprenticeship Service has helped us to discover talented young individuals from West Cheshire College and Mid-Cheshire College who have shown a passion for building and joinery.

We are proud to report that our apprentice Floyd has completed his first year with us, and his first year at West Cheshire College! We have featured his progress throughout the year on this blog, from his introduction to the company through being named Employee of the Month back in October.

Pictured below is director of Maxiflow Building Services Warren Beatty presenting Floyd with his Level 1 Key Skills in Communication certificate, a well-deserved celebration of a year’s hard work.

We would like to publicly congratulate Floyd and thank him for his excellent job performance!

Apprentice Floyd City and Guilds Certificate Presentation

At any age, it can be difficult to figure out a career for yourself. It can be especially tricky in high school, when the working world seems a million years away!

In conjunction with Working2gether we are delighted to reveal that we have undertaken the first stages of a brilliant new work experience scheme.

The term ‘work experience’ can conjure images of high school students arbitrarily assigned to shops, offices and other industries which may be entirely unsuited to their interests. This scheme aims to match students to a wide range of business types, which can help to foster their hobbies into professions.

The scheme is designed to encourage young people to apply their skills to a practical working environment. This is especially useful to students who are interested in jobs within the building trade, as the satisfaction that comes from creating something with your own hands can be appreciated first-hand.

This week, we have taken aboard a student named Tom from Upton High School in Chester. Tom has a keen interest in construction, particularly joinery and other forms of woodworking.

During his induction, Tom successfully completed two of our online training modules, achieving 86% in Asbestos Awareness and an incredible 100% in Manual Handling!

We will do our best to encourage Tom’s obvious natural talent during his time at Maxiflow and wish him the best of luck!

Apprenticeship success at Mid-Cheshire College Employers Evening

Mid-Cheshire College Employers Evening Apprenticeships

Maxiflow were a featured employer at the recent Employers Evening at Mid-Cheshire College.

Featuring a mix of local businesses and national companies, the event was an opportunity for students and school-leavers to discuss their career prospects with potential employers.

Many different industries were present at the event, from banks and insurance brokers to charities and organic food wholesalers, offering a wide variety of choices to the young crowd.

Representing the multifaceted branches of the construction industry, Maxiflow had a very strong showing at the event.

On-hand to offer advice and guidance were several Maxiflow team members, who graciously volunteered their time to aid the upcoming generation.

Maxiflow Contracts Director Warren Beatty and Manager of Mechanical & Electrical Services John Hughes held court on a range of topics from their years of experience, both from out in the field and from their management perspective.

Building Foreman Jeremy Brandreth and Joinery Specialist Aaron Ankers offered a personal perspective on the subject of apprenticeships, due to Aaron being a former Maxiflow apprentice and Jeremy his mentor.

We were greatly encouraged by the interest we received from the young people we spoke to at the evening.

A number of students commented that they expected the event to be “very corporate” and they were pleasantly surprised that employment opportunities in our sector were represented.

We were delighted to discuss how rewarding a career utilising practical skills can be. With so many budding young professionals at the event, we hope we have helped to inspire a few students.

We also distributed our literature and spoke to careers advisors at Mid-Cheshire College and the Northwich Job Centre, providing new avenues for students to get in touch with a successful construction company and find out more about our world.

New Maxiflow Apprenticeships In 2012

Maxiflow Apprenticeships in Cheshire

2011 is drawing to a close, but Maxiflow is already looking forward to the opportunities we will be presenting in 2012.

We are strengthening our partnership with West Cheshire College by offering new apprenticeships in our Building and Mechanical & Electrical divisions.

Maxiflow strongly believes that investing in people is the only way our industry will be able to move forward.

We hear anecdotes about teachers and career advisors unfairly characterising trade apprenticeships as a fallback solution or as a short-term stop gap, which can be harmful to the confidence and self-esteem of young people.

Skilled trades can offer a fulfilling career for many bright young people and we feel that it is important for this option to be presented in a positive manner which will attract the most enthusiastic candidates.

Maxiflow Young Apprentice in Chester

Our current apprentice Floyd has already shone in his role, surpassing everyone’s expectations in a short amount of time. He was named Employee Of The Month in October and has proven to be a valuable asset to the building team.

Floyd has recently been granted his own tool allowance, demonstrating our level of trust in his ability and our confidence in his capability to work independently.

We will be working with West Cheshire College to bring our new recruits aboard in the new year, so best of luck to everyone who wishes to be a part of the Maxiflow team!

We’re extremely proud to report that our young apprentice Floyd has been declared Maxiflow Employee of the Month!

As we have covered in a previous blog post, Floyd came to us through West Cheshire College‘s apprenticeship scheme and he has quickly become a valued member of the Maxiflow Building Team.

Demonstrating a level of commitment that is extremely admirable for a 17-year-old, Floyd has risen to every challenge we have offered him. The demands of the building trade can be tough, requiring quick thinking and a deceptively large set of skills, so for our young apprentice to have excelled everyone’s expectations is remarkable.

Floyd has mainly been dedicating his time to working on our projects at Chester Market, where stallholders have told us about his hard work and upbeat attitude.

Well done Floyd!
