Maxiflows contribution to Social Value

Maxiflow is a member of the Supply Chain Sustainability School. The organisation represents a common approach to addressing sustainability within our supply chains. Its partners include firms such as Balfour Beatty, BAM, Carillion, Galliford Try, Interserve and Sir Robert McAlpine.

Sustainability is an Important factor in Maxiflows commitment to Being carbon neutral as possible and rebuilding our relationship with our planet.

Paul Goulbourne, a member of our office team who is heading maxiflows initiative on “Social Values” has recently attended a course run by the Supply Chain Sustainability School. Social value is a way of thinking about how scarce resources are allocated and used. It involves looking beyond the price of each individual contract and looking at what the collective benefit to a community is when a public body chooses to award a contract.

By ensuring that Social Value is deeply embedded into our strategy, we can be sure to deliver on our Sustainability targets. As the community is at the heart of everything Maxiflow does “Social Value” is extremely important to us as an organisation.

Maxiflows strategy on Social value asks the question: “If £1 is spent on the delivery of services, can that same £1 be used, to also produce a wider benefit to the community?”

Our commitment to “Social Value” is currently:-

  • We provide employment for the local community.
  • We offer enhanced pay and conditions to our employees.
  • We work in partnership with West Cheshire College employing and providing training for many of our apprentices.
  • We provide in-house training to employees offering City and Guilds, NVQS and trade specific qualifications.
  • We prefer to deal with local suppliers, always ensuring that suppliers are paid promptly.
  • We support the local football team – Chester FC – Providing much needed sponsorship as Fabrication Improvement Partners.
  • We support war veterans. Many of our employees are ex-military and have served in Iraq and Afghanistan.
  • We have contracts with local organisations such as MOD, CWAC, NHS and Chester Zoo.
  • Our workforce has a wide age demographic.
  • We employ people with a wide range of disabilities such as war veterans with PTSD.
  • We provide work experience schemes to students from local schools/colleges.

Maxiflow will continue to work with the Supply Chain Sustainability School to maximise our positive contribution to society and the local community that we serve.

Monkeys and mini-golf at Chester Zoo

Chester Zoo Mini-golf kiosk

The winter months may have been uncommonly mild so far, but that hasn’t meant that the new year hasn’t brought a large number of weather-related jobs to Maxiflow!

Our partnership with Chester Zoo has been strengthened by a number of reactive, maintenance and improvement works we have carried out across the site since the start of 2012.

Did you know that you can find a mini-golf course at Chester Zoo? The 9-hole course is designed to teach children about the importance of wildlife conservation while they play.

Chester Zoo Mini-golf kiosk roof

Maxiflow were contacted to take part in a conservation project of our own – helping the zoo to reduce its carbon footprint.

The little mini-golf kiosk serves customers with their tickets and refreshments year-round, so heating the outbuilding efficiently during the winter months is important to the zoo.

We replaced the outdated felt shingles on the roof with steel cladding and improved the kiosk’s thermal insulation. These improvements should help keep the heat in and the energy costs down.

Chester Zoo Islands In Danger

Meanwhile, at the Islands In Danger exhibit, the cold weather was exerting itself in a far more direct and dangerous fashion.

Islands In Danger houses exotic and endangered animals such as the Komodo Dragon and Red Birds of Paradise, species which aren’t terribly tolerant of the temperatures of a Great British Winter.

So when a spate of frost damaged the plaster fronting the building, it was imperative that the cracks were not allowed to grow and threaten the controlled climate inside the building.

Our re-rendering efforts patched the wall successfully, helping to maintain the security of some members of the planet’s most threatened species.

Chester Zoo Monkey House

Finally, over at the monkey house, the barrier between man and beast was looking decidedly shaky as we investigated the building’s surrounding wall.

The recent high winds that have assaulted the North-West of England had caused the parapet’s coping stones to detach, threatening the integrity of the enclosure.

During our repairs, the primates had to be kept inside for the safety of everyone involved. We didn’t manage to interview any of our furry cousins, but they looked like they were getting pretty jealous that we were getting to climb all over their walls while they were stuck indoors!

Preventing Flooding at Chester Zoo

Chester Zoo Drainage

Throughout December, Maxiflow have been continuing our long partnership with Chester Zoo by carrying out a program of essential drainage works.

British weather is notoriously unpredictable, especially during the winter months, and many types of businesses are at risk from heavy rainfall and the effects of snow and sleet. The logistics of effectively managing large volumes of surface water and sodden earth are incredibly difficult without a well-maintained drainage system.

Zoos are particularly vulnerable, given their large sizes and semi-rural composition, as Chester Zoo discovered when nature attempted to reclaim their pipe network.

Chester Zoo Flood Prevention

After days of continuous rainfall, the canals which host Chester Zoo’s boat ride were in danger of bursting their banks. This not only presented a danger to the public, but also had the potential to flood several animal enclosures.

When we investigated, we discovered that the concrete chamber overflow wasn’t regulating the canal’s level as intended. What we found inside rivalled our previous record for drain blockage:

Chester Zoo Root Infestation

The effort to unclog the extremely heavy root infestation took several hours’ careful work to avoid damaging the pipes, but such efforts are extremely satisfying once you see the fruits of your labour!

Re-roofing Chester Zoo accommodation

Maxiflow tiling & slating

Continuing our commitment to carbon reduction, Maxiflow have replaced the roof on a property owned by Chester Zoo.

Upgrading your home’s insulation is one of the most pro-active steps you can take for a low-carbon future.

As we all know, laws of convection cause the heat generated by your central heating system to rise, meaning that a shocking amount of thermal energy can be lost through inadequately constructed and shielded roofs.

By minimizing the amount of heat your home loses, you can reduce your resource expenditure as well as saving yourself money on gas/electric bills.

This project involved a complete roof refurbishment, owing to the property’s roof reaching the end of its practical life.

In addition to the highly visible and attractive re-tiling work, the insulation was completely upgraded. Maxiflow can now guarantee a cosy winter for the Zoo’s offsite accommodation.
