Shaping construction’s future with Apprenticeships and Work Experience schemes

Apprenticeships Working Together Celebration

It’s an exciting time to be part of the Maxiflow family! We are currently engaged in two important schemes which are helping to introduce young people to the construction industry.

The National Apprenticeship Service has helped us to discover talented young individuals from West Cheshire College and Mid-Cheshire College who have shown a passion for building and joinery.

We are proud to report that our apprentice Floyd has completed his first year with us, and his first year at West Cheshire College! We have featured his progress throughout the year on this blog, from his introduction to the company through being named Employee of the Month back in October.

Pictured below is director of Maxiflow Building Services Warren Beatty presenting Floyd with his Level 1 Key Skills in Communication certificate, a well-deserved celebration of a year’s hard work.

We would like to publicly congratulate Floyd and thank him for his excellent job performance!

At any age, it can be difficult to figure out a career for yourself. It can be especially tricky in high school, when the working world seems a million years away!

In conjunction with Working2gether we are delighted to reveal that we have undertaken the first stages of a brilliant new work experience scheme.

The term ‘work experience’ can conjure images of high school students arbitrarily assigned to shops, offices and other industries which may be entirely unsuited to their interests. This scheme aims to match students to a wide range of business types, which can help to foster their hobbies into professions.

The scheme is designed to encourage young people to apply their skills to a practical working environment. This is especially useful to students who are interested in jobs within the building trade, as the satisfaction that comes from creating something with your own hands can be appreciated first-hand.

This week, we have taken aboard a student named Tom from Upton High School in Chester. Tom has a keen interest in construction, particularly joinery and other forms of woodworking.

During his induction, Tom successfully completed two of our online training modules, achieving 86% in Asbestos Awareness and an incredible 100% in Manual Handling!

We will do our best to encourage Tom’s obvious natural talent during his time at Maxiflow and wish him the best of luck!

Upton Library latest victim of lead theft

Continuing our coverage of the ongoing spate of lead thefts in the Chester area, Maxiflow have been informed of yet another target. Upton Library have become the latest high-profile victim in a series of crimes which have occurred over the last few months.

The theft from the library on Wealstone Lane was particularly brazen, occurring on the roof of a building which is only a single storey high in the middle of a residential area. Though we do not know whether the crimes are directly connected, it is clear that the thieves are becoming increasingly opportunistic. Businesses and public services cannot afford to assume that their roofs are safe because of natural deterrents such as location and accessibility.

As our coverage demonstrates, thieves can and will strip the lead from every type of building and even from unthinkable places such as war memorials. Maxiflow sincerely believe that pro-active prevention is better than dealing with the aftereffects of a devastating act of vandalism. We would advise that anybody with a lead installation give consideration to services such as forensic marking which are designed to effectively deter and catch these criminals.

As ever, if you have any information on any cases of stolen lead in the area, please inform the Cheshire Police.

Lead Theft at Holy Ascension Church, Upton

Holy Ascension Church in Upton, Chester

Adding to our previous coverage of lead thefts from prominent roofs in the Cheshire area, we have received notification that Upton-by-Chester’s Holy Ascension Church has also been targeted.

Though we haven’t investigated the site ourselves, we understand that vandals have torn several flashings from around the parapet upstand and damaged the main flat roof covering, resulting in rainwater leaking into the north transept.

Maxiflow are appealing to members of the public to come forward if they have any information at all about these highly upsetting incidents. In our opinion, the petty-minded thieves who have carried out these crimes against churches, libraries, civic halls and war memorials are truly disgusting individuals with no consideration for their own communities.
